Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) is a global broadband network from the Inmarsat satellite communication operator. The network allows access to the internet with coverage across the entire planet (except the polar caps) and is the unique and most popular service for providing mobile satellite internet in the world.
BGAN allows you to get speeds up to ~500 kbit/s, which is sufficient for any tasks, while the terminals do not require any complex configuration, special knowledge or conditions. Like any satellite communication, you only need an open view of the sky. Turn on the terminal, point it toward the satellite and that’s it — you are online. Usually this procedure takes no more than 1 minute. This feature is unique because alternative VSAT terminals are much larger in size and require precise and time-consuming alignment.
The wide BGAN tariff grid allows you to choose a tariff exactly for your type of usage: from frequent but small data volumes to occasional use a few times a year during trips and travels. Like phone tariffs, BGAN tariffs are divided into contract and voucher systems. The cost of 1 MB, depending on the type and tariff, ranges from $3 to $9 per MB. For the younger IsatHub iSavi model, there is a promotional tariff: unlimited internet for $900 per month.
In addition to the internet, all Inmarsat BGAN terminals also support voice communication, making this solution an indispensable tool for trips or locations with absent or limited traditional communication. At the same time, the cost of calls is even lower than on tariffs for satellite phones: from $0.5 to $1. BGAN terminals are increasingly becoming an excellent alternative to using a satellite phone.
Another important feature of the BGAN system is the ability to stream data (guaranteed speed channel) with per-minute billing. It is used for transmitting large amounts of data or for streaming video reports from remote locations.
In addition to ease of use and global coverage, BGAN is also distinguished by the compactness of compatible devices and a fairly wide range of equipment that essentially covers all main requests: from portable land use to aviation.
